Chief Chick Comments
Some men may enjoy this period piece taken from Henry James's book of the same name. Kate becomes the ward of her aunt, played by Charlotte Rampling, who wishes Kate to marry well. However, Kate is in love with Merton, a well educated but poor journalist. Kate becomes friends with Milly Theale who is an American heiress visiting London and visits Venice with her new friend. Kate decides to marry her own love, Merton, to Milly so that when Milly dies of some incurable disease, her love, Merton will be wealthy. The movie is close but does not strictly follow the novel. And the ethic of Merton tends to get in the way. Sad but lovely in some ways. It is hard, however, to really like Helena Bonham Carter's character, Kate, who is just not sympathetic. The scenes in Venice are especially lovely and set in 1910 very believable.
