This classic from 1942 is interesting. Be advised it reflects the attitudes of the era; never-the-less, I was gripped by the story. Charlotte(Bette Davis) is the only daughter of a tyrannical mother who tries to control her every move and to date has ruined Charlotte's life. Through a sister-in-law she meets Claude Rains who is a leading edge psychiatrist who takes Charlotte away from her Boston mansion to a country life cure. Eventually, she goes on a cruise and meets Jerry who is a married man going to South America for work. They become friends. A lot of story is packed into 2 hours; however, I enjoyed it. Wonderful acting and I became quite enamored of Paul Henreid.

Pure soap opera, but with this cast, it’s a great movie!!! Evil manipulative mother, homely daughter who becomes a swan, romantic but futile love affair, sad sac daughter who now has hope; what more can you ask for? Knitting? Yes, Charlotte knits while on a deck chair!! BRAVO!
