Chief Chick Comments

Marian Cotillard gives a moving performance as Ewa(pronounced Eva) who is desperate to see her sister again and falls prey to Bruno Weiss. He is not entirely evil, but evil enough. Later, his cousin, Orlando the magician makes an appearance and like Bruno is entranced with Ewa's beauty and reserved manner. But Ewa has already been convinced to sell herself to make enough money to free her sister from Ellis Island. For those of us who grew up believing in the Quote on the Statue of Liberty...Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to be free etc, this is a rude wake up call to what conditions were really like. The movie is a bit long and some scenes could have been shortened or eliminated. Yet it is a moving story with surprises
