Chief Chick Comments

This is the mostly true story of how the women of Great Britain won the right to vote which they achieved before American Women did. It is not a pretty story, but it is largely accurate save for the fiction surrounding the hardships of one working woman played by Carey Mulligan who, in fact, is representative of the gross injustices served on many, many women. My grandmother was 28 years old before she had the right the vote in The United States. It is dangerous for us to forget any of these great struggles and take for granted the privileges and rights we enjoy today be we women, blacks, or other oppressed people. Mulligan is very, very good and the supporting cast very real. Meryl Streep plays the leader of the movement but only plays one short scene. It is not worthy of an Oscar nomination but who knows with Streep who is fabulous. I have marked this Take A Date, because there is nothing "girlie" about this sometimes violent movie. It would not hurt most men to see what British women endured 100 years ago to win the right to vote and eventually the right to manage their own finances and importantly to have a say in what happens to their children. This is a must see.
