This improbable story takes place over a 13 year period in Los Angeles. In flashbacks, we see Jess, a police detective, at the scene of a crime when her partner, Ray, discovers that the victim is Carolyn, Jess's 18 year old daughter. With many twists and turns we are taken to 2015 to find that the murderer for a variety reasons has been lost and certainly not charged. Chiwetel Ejiofor plays Ray who is now the chief of security for the New York Mets but who has also been scrolling for 13 years through the prison population in the US trying to find the murderer again assuming he has been arrested for something else. Jess can hardly stand the resurfacing of this tragedy and looks "a million years old" as Ray later tells her. Nicole Kidman plays the new District Attorney who 13 years later is the elected District Attorney for Los Angeles. Ray has come to L.A. who asks her to reopen the case. The pain is palpable. We think Claire, played by Kidman, is a hardened lawyer on the way up, but maybe she has some soft corners in addition to the attraction she and Ray feel for each other. If you have ever been intimidated by Julia Roberts, this is the movie to see. Essentially, she wears no makeup and baggy bag clothes. Her acting is good as is the others, but the story is just lacking any real credibility. It is ok, but do not expect a masterpiece!
