This is one weird movie but apparently true to the book it is based on. Set in 1925 Montana on a prosperous cattle ranch where life is hard, two brothers run the ranch, Phil and George. George finds widow, Rose, and marries her and brings her back to the ranch. Phil is a nasty piece of work and torments her and then her teenage son studying to be a doctor like his father. The son, Peter, is delicate and criticized by the ranch hands. Eventually Phil takes Pete under his wing. In the meantime, Rose is disturbed by the turn of events and drinks even more bourbon. The ending of the movie is a surprise and, initially, I couldn't believe it. But what you suspect is meant to be. Apparently, Netflix wanted Director, Campion, to be more explicit. However, you can figure it out! I can't say I enjoyed it, but I do understand that the acting and filming was very well done.

A dark story, about a family, each member with a multitude of interlocking issues in the relationships. Intense but no a pleasant movie.
