Ruth Kettering has been given a large famous ruby by her father, Rufus Von Aldin, a rich American businessman. Ruth is married apparently unhappily to a titled Englishman who shows up at her London birthday party drunk. Ruth leaves the next day for the south of France and takes the ruby with her. When the train arrives in Nice, there is a dead faceless woman in her compartment. Of course, our hero Hercule Poirot is on the train having befriended a new heiress who is on her way to visit distant relatives at The Villa Marguerite in Nice.
