Chief Chick Comments

This is one hilarious movie. It is a remake of My Favorite Wife which starred Cary Grant and Irene Dunne. Originally, this movie was to star Marilyn Monroe, but her difficulties in making it to the set and her ultimate death put it on hold. Doris Day returns to find Polly Bergen is about to tie the knot with her darling husband. Polly, of course, plays a high maintenance gal, but James Garner feels his two children (with Doris) need a mother and he wants a wife. Thelma Ritter plays his mother who figures out Doris is back. Doris wants to be careful about springing this news on her family, but she waits too long and must go to the honeymoon destination and stop James Garner from consummating his marriage. Really, really funny.

Doris Day is at her most Doris Day-ish in this true Chick Flick. Lovely clothes, some singing, lots of righteous indignation. Polly Bergen is mostly a caricature of a spoiled, indulged woman, but she also wears beautiful clothes and FABULOUS charm bracelets. A pleasure to watch!
