Chief Chick Comments

Talented Joaquin Phoenix is Freddie Quell, a disturbed, violent, strangely over-sexed Navy veteran. Creepy Freddie meets charming but strange Lancaster Dodd who has written a book,The Cause, about healing and finding yourself. He has adherents across the country and ultimately abroad. His young, pregnant wife, is Peggy, played by Amy Adams. Lancaster, Peggy, and 3 children-some from previous marriages-are all redheads as are a number of characters in the film. Peggy is a bit creepy herself and very, very strong willed. Some say the movie mirrors the beginnings of Scientology. I found it much too long and tedious much like the process of "Processing"- portrayed in the movie. Freddie is only befriended by Lancaster who controls him. Throughout Freddie dreams of Doris, a teenage love from Massachusetts-also a redhead! Lots of nudity, profanities and some explicit sex round out this strange movie. Some will find much to "think" about and ponder. I am afraid I looked at my watch way too many times.
