Well, we learn a bit more about Morse as we meet the woman to whom he was engaged when a student at Oxford. But she left him to marry her current husband who is found at his desk shot in the head. As he was confined to a wheelchair with an incurable disease, it is presumed that he shot himself. But there is much more to this story.
