While this movie is based on a true story, I am sure much of it is not factual. He did invent the vibrator; in the movie it is with the help of his best friend and benefactor who is fascinated with electricity. After losing his job at several clinics in London which still practiced bleeding, using leeches, and did not adhere to good sanitation, Mortimer is hired, after a long search, by a London doctor who specializes in woman's hysteria. Hysteria at the time was a "catch all" phrase for just about anything wrong with a middle class or upper class woman of the time. He becomes interested in the daughter who runs the household, but becomes friends with the second daughter, who is effectively a social worker and proponent of womens' rights- to vote, to be educated, to work. The Victorian era is shown mostly to be charming and Rupert Everett plays his usual and charming upper class Lord. Maggie Gyllenhaal is terrific as Emily and Hugh Dancy a charming, if innocent, Dr. Granville.
