Chief Chick Comments

Fascinating story, told as a flashback from Antarctica, of Hortense Laborie (the fictional name of Daniéle Delpeuch) who ran a truffle farm yet was asked to become the personal chef for French President Françoise Mitterand. She soon discovers that the main kitchen is very, very hostile and uncooperative especially because the President love her food and her insistence on carefully sourced ingredients. The President longs for food which reminds him of his childhood. Mitterand, himself, was born in 1916 and loved the cooking of his family. The story begins with Hortense's last day as the cook for a group of workers on an island in the Antarctic. An Australian writer follows her around hoping for a story, but except for the flashback, Hortense is too busy preparing a final meal for her friends on the island. Every dish makes you want to hop into the movie for a taste. Lovely, lovely movie!
