Chief Chick Comments

This winner of the 2013 (presented in 2014) Academy Award for best foreign film is beautifully filmed. Toni Servillo is very good although perhaps I liked him better in Viva La Liberta. At any rate, it it often difficult to determine whether we are seeing reality, dreams, or visions. The most poignant dialogue occurs just after Jep leaves a new lover who has gone to get some dreary she wants to show up. As he walks away from her home he says " A few weeks after I turned 65, I realized I cannot waste time doing things I didn't want to do" He later meets the daughter of an old friend who runs a strip club. They begin a relationship but there is mystery as to her end. In her 40's she still dances at her father's club but he says he does not know why she needs the money. She will not tell Jep. Jep learns his first love has died when her widower comes to tell him. This certainly has an effect at him. All interesting, but to me not compelling.
