This movie, starring Matthew McConaughey, is sometimes a little tough to watch but is based on the true story of Newton Knight who as a medic during the Civil War from the South starts to discover that the rich, slave owning citizens of the Confederacy are spared conscription as well as confiscation of their produce and goods. After suffering losses of family himself, Newton deserts to a swamp where he joins 5 runaway slaves and he leads an insurgence against the local Rebs who are killing and confiscating in his county, Jones County. McConaughey does an excellent job and Mbatha-Raw is luminous as the house slave who helps him. It is lucky McConaughey lost so much weight for Dallas Buyers Club as the hungry look is certainly necessary for this film. About halfway through the film, we are taken to a Mississippi courtroom circa 1950 where an ancestor of Knight's is being tried. Since the film is based on facts, I presume this is true although it is a bit of a reach. Still interesting and probably how Knight's story came to light.

Very interesting piece of Civil War history is revealed in this movie. Excellent acting, and the largely harmonious relations among the races was encouraging too see. Yes, it was violent in places, but thoroughly enjoyable. Just a bit long.
