Ridley Scott (American Gangster) and Cormac McCarthy (No Country For Old Men) team as director and writer of this violent drug cartel movie. Michael Fassbender is madly in love with Penélope Cruz's character while being friends with the wildly and ostentatiously corrupt character played by Javier Bardem whose girlfriend with an agenda of her own is played by Cameron Diaz. Fassbender proposes to his girlfriend and flies to Amsterdam to buy her a diamond ring. Meanwhile, he continues his legal practice and connects with Brad Pitt's character who is part of the "deal". We see how drugs are being smuggled into the US headed for Chicago, and how rival cartels hijack them. All goes wrong and Fassbender is in big trouble. While warned not to do this by the drug people themselves, he now finds himself without friends or resources and his fiancee is missing. Very violent, course, and sadly disgusting. I can see that men will like this movie. I hated it as a woman but saw that it was probably good film making.
