Following World War II, Rachel joins her husband in Germany where as commander, they requisition a beautiful country home near Hamburg which was leveled at the end of the war by bombing. The owner and his daughter move to the attic much to Rachel's dismay. Her husband is rarely home and is little comfort to her from the death of her 11 year old son in the blitz. Nature takes its course and a romance ensues. The cinematography and "feel" of this movie is beautiful whether or not you like the ending.
