Chief Chick Comments

Melodramatic "Chick Flick" of Jacqueline Susann's first novel of the same name which stars Barbara Parkins, Patty Duke, and Sharon Tate as the three women who become involved in show business in different ways. Parkins plays the New England beauty who becomes a secretary at a talent lawyer's office, Duke, a singer and actress, and Tate, a chorus girl to start. Unfortunately, this was Tate's biggest role before her marriage to Roman Pulanski and her murder by the Charles Manson "Family" in 1969. Parkins plays Anne who loves a lawyer/theatrical agent but finds he will not commit. Duke is Neely O'Hara, a young singer who ultimately becomes a big star in Hollywood and Tate plays Jennifer North who marries for love before tragedy strikes. Parkins is quite good in her role, while Duke seems "over the top" especially when she is supposed to be drunk and mean. Tate is mostly beautiful and delivers her lines well. The fashions are great and very 1960's. Love them as well as the decor in the various apartments and homes. Susan Hayward is a seasoned broadway headliner who is only to happy to stab young upstarts in the back. If you look closely, you will even see Jacqueline Susann and Richard Dreyfus(uncredited) in short scenes. Of course, Dionne Warwick's rendition of the theme song is unforgettable. Overall, the story grabbed my interest and the big hair and big fashions really drew me in. Yes Just Girls. Most men would not be able to tolerate this movie, butI liked it quite a bit!
