Chief Chick Comments

Metaphor: a thing regarded as representative or symbolic of something else, especially something abstract(Google). First, and foremost "Learning to Drive" is a metaphor…in this case for the end of a marriage and the beginning of a new life. Well with that out of the way, Patricia Clarkson is marvelous as a woman facing an unexpected divorce. Wendy(Clarkson) plays a New York book critic who has basically supported her family (husband and now grown daughter) while her husband tried in vain to get tenure at a University. Grace Gummer, yes Meryl Streep's daughter, appears a couple of times as Wendy's college age daughter. Through some unusual circumstances, Wendy meets Darwan(Kingsley), a Shik taxi driver/driving instructor. He is a US citizen after obtaining political asylum some years before. While he is negotiating with his Indian resident sister over whether he will wed an Indian woman of her choosing, he instructs Wendy in driving but also in life. Both face difficulties, but one can imagine oneself as either of them with a little imagination. The screenplay is well done and direction in New York City and Queens good. A few tearlets, but overall a happy movie. Just so you know, I am obsessed with Patricia Clarkson's hair…I want it! Finally, a close call on taking a date. If he only likes he man movies, skip it.
