Chief Chick Comments
Moving portrayal of life in a Welsh mining town at the turn of the 19th century. The story is told through the eyes of Roddy McDowall who is young Huw Morgan. All of his brothers and father work in the coal mine; yet their valley is still lovely and provides a good living to this religious family. Huw is the youngest and Angharad, his only sister, is played by Maureen O'Hara. Walter Pidgeon is the new preacher who catches her eye. This movie is tragic in many ways; yet it won 5 Oscars including the best film of 1941, Best Supporting Actor, Donald Crisp, and Best Director, John Ford. Black and White which enhances the hardness of life; yet, the qualities of the family come through.
