Chief Chick Comments

This interesting but not totally engrossing film tells the story of the choice and filming of Psycho. North by Northwest had just been a huge hit for Hitchcock in the late 50's, but not he was restless and wanted to do something different. He decided to film Psycho based on a book and true story of Ed Gein, a madman in Wisconsin who was a mass murderer and who appears throughout the film in Hitchcock's imaginings. Helen Mirren plays Alma Reville, Hitchcock's long suffering wife who is a talented producer/writer on her own and was once Hitchcock's boss in the early years. Scarlet Johansson plays Janet Leigh and James D'Arcy plays Anthony Perkins. Interestingly, to me at least, is that when I reviewed "In Their Skin" which opened shortly before Hitchcock, I commented that D'Arcy in that movie reminded me immensely of Anthony Perkins in Psycho as Norman Bates. Anyway, the movie kept my attention, but is not, I think, a great movie. I suspect the screenwriting and filming was a bit too kind to Hitchcock.
