Chief Chick Comments

After the sudden death of the Pope, Cardinal Lawrence must organize the secretive election of a new Pope. However, hints of intrigue seem to invade the conclave. Stanley Tucci is a candidate favored by the moderates with another Cardinal favorite by the Conservatives. John Lithgow plays an American Cardinal who seems to be less than honest with Lawrence. Fascinating look at the process. The recreation of the Sistine Chapel and other areas are incredible. Great acting. Expect Oscar nods.

This was a thoroughly enjoyable movie. I had heard a bit about it, so I was looking forward to the experience, and it did not disappoint. My intellect was initially trying to identify who was who. Then the mental gymnastics began of trying to determine the intention and truthfulness of each of the major candidates for Pope. Was Cardinal Lawrence (Ralph Fiennes) really not interested in being Pope? How could Cardinal Tremblay (John Lithgow) do what he did and still proclaim so convincingly that he was innocent? And so it all unfolded to the somewhat predictable ending, but quite unexpected conclusion. Highly recommended.
