Seemiingly based on Tennessee Williams play, "A Streetcar Named Desire", Blue Jasmine is a story often told in flashback. Jasmine, played beautifully by Cate Blanchett, has lost everything...her husband, stepson, Fifth Avenue Apartment, Society Life... She arrives in San Francisco to put her life back together as she stays with her hardworking sister, Ginger, who is a checkout girl at a grocery store and whose taste is men just doesn't suit Jasmine. I found the movie incredibly sad, although predictable. Jasmine tries to work; she knows she must. But she wants her old life back and lacks the empathy necessary for any human being. It is a well done movie, but I cannot help feeling depressed. While I did not like Jasmine, I liked Cate Blanchett's rendition. The movie...not so much!

I agree that Cate Blanchett's acting is superb, but I didn't care about any of the characters. So I wasn't involved. I go to movies to get my brain stimulated or my heart wrenched or both! A movie that fits the bill is Xavier Koller's Someone Like Me, the simple story of a man born with a cleft palate, who works as a barber (always looking in mirrors) and falls in love. But wait, maybe this has already been reviewed. I will check. In the meantime, I wanted to like Blue Jasmine. But I didn't. And I'm not even blue about it.

I'm not a huge Woody Allen fan (although I did like Match Point & Midnight in Paris), but I am a huge Cate Blanchett fan – and she does not disappoint! Andrew Dice Clay was very much a pleasant surprise for me as the sister's ex-husband. I found the editing of the movie great, as it flips back & forth from past to present time. There were humorous times in the movie, with well written dialogue. Overall, though, I would not call it a comedy. It contains a comparison of the 'classes' (the 'haves' vs the 'have nots') which ends with the 'have nots' winning the 'happiness award.' The ending of the movie came suddenly, with me not expecting it when it arrived, and wanting more.
