Based on Michael Lewis's book of the same name about the 2008 crash of the housing and mortgage markets, the movie tries to make a complicated topic understandable and in part does a decent job. However, unless you are a financial professional, you won't necessarily "get" all the nuances. Never-the-less, the film interestingly uses famous personalities to explain some of the basic financial concepts and products. In one scene Selena Gomez, illustrates the mortgage securities market by playing blackjack in Las Vegas. The story involves four groups of individuals who separately with some overlap realize that the housing market is tanking and the complicated mortgage securitization market will suffer large losses. The personalities on both sides are exaggerated yet the drama helps emphacize the shenannigans which actually went on. No all bankers are/were not bad guys, but the false bravado of this male dominated environment led to greater and greater mistakes and misdeeds all the way from the SEC to the rating agencies to the banks and individual mortgage brokers. The truth spoken by Brad Pitt's character emphacized the saddest reality which is that people will lose their jobs, their homes, and die because of the bad behavior and/or ignorance of those involved. It is a complicated story. I read the book which the movie follows although to some extent in an outsized way. If you hate math or finance, not that much fun. If you are interested in financial markets, then see it!
